How Wpromote Made User Research the Reason Clients Say Yes with Userbrain

When Allison Tkachenko joined Wpromote, there was no UX team to join. Her boss had hired her to build one from nothing: "I know this is really important and we don't have it here, so I want you to grow it." Wpromote is a digital marketing agency grounded in paid media, the kind of shop that gets measured on traffic and conversions, and Allison arrived into a company where most colleagues still thought UX meant making things look nice.

When Everyone Thinks They Can Do Design

Building a research practice inside an agency has a specific difficulty: design feels like something anyone can have an opinion about, and modern tools make it easy for everyone to put something together.

"Everyone kind of thinks that they can do UX design. Educating them on what user experience design actually is, that's been critical."

Before Allison, Wpromote ran no user testing at all. Design decisions came down to whoever argued best, and client conversations stalled on preference. Meanwhile the clients themselves wanted proof of everything, even for pages that had not launched yet. Their first question was always the same: what data points do you have?

Allison had a design and UX research background, and she knew what closed that gap. It wasn't a better argument. It was evidence.

The Tool That Kept Doing More

Allison brought in the testing tool she had used at her previous company, and it got Wpromote started. When she compared it against Userbrain, two things settled it: Userbrain could test live sites, and AI Insights turned raw sessions into patterns she could act on immediately.

Userbrain became the tool the team reached for, because everything the old workflow produced, Userbrain produced better.

Testing Built Into Every Stage of a Client Relationship

Today user testing runs through the whole arc of a Wpromote engagement. In the sales process, a test shows prospects what working with Wpromote actually looks like. Once a client signs, discovery opens with baseline sentiment testing. Through the design phase, tests keep the work honest. And when a client digs in on a preference, Allison has something better than a debate.

"A lot of times our clients will get hung up on things that are opinion based, or the business wants this and we disagree. So we'll just put it through to a test."

Because Allison also oversees the CRO team, she has started coupling unmoderated testing with the A/B testing program. Pushing a variant live means putting live conversions at risk, so the team now runs a user test first to see how a change is likely to perform, then ships it. Clients, especially the bigger ones, love the idea. Few other agencies offer it.

Research That Wins the Client and Keeps Them

The measure of a research practice in an agency is whether it earns its place commercially. At Wpromote, it does. Research is no longer Allison's department pitching itself internally. It is part of what the whole company sells.

"No matter what we're doing, the research and the user testing is always being sold by whoever's talking. I rely on your platform so much because it's helped me show people the value in research. It's why we get clients sometimes, and what keeps them happy."

Speed is what makes that sustainable in an agency that works fast. Allison still watches every video herself, and she wants to, but AI Insights tells her what the feedback adds up to before she starts, so she knows what she is looking for.

"The AI feature really is what sells it for me. It helps me grasp what the feedback is saying first, so I know what to expect going into the videos."

"You Have to Admit You Don't Know Everything"

Asked what she would tell a peer at another agency wondering whether user research is worth building into their offering, Allison starts with a question of her own: how do you actually know your solutions are right?

"You have to be able to admit first that you don't know everything. Then you listen to the people's actual feedback, you watch them, and you can move in the best path forward based on real data. User research is the only way that you and your clients come together and agree on something, because you're looking at real people giving you feedback."

That, she says, is what she is really handing her clients. It looks like data. What it actually is, is empathy.
