The One Thing AI Can’t Replace

AI can help you write a product brief. It can turn customer calls into themes. It can draft release notes, review a pricing page, create header images for blog articles, sketch onboarding ideas, summarise support tickets, and help with UX testing.

But AI can’t tell you how a real person is actually experiencing your product. That’s the line.

Synthetic users, AI user tests, simulated participants, or whatever you call them, all promise feedback without people. But you can only trust synthetic output when you compare it with real UX testing.

What AI actually gives you

A synthetic user tool usually works like this: a model gets a prompt, a task, and screenshots of your product. It’s told to act like a user. Then it talks through what it would do.

The output can sound close to a real session. The model hesitates. It questions a label. It says a button is unclear. It gives recommendations.

But no one used the product.

No one got stuck on your checkout page. No one missed the pricing toggle. No one clicked the wrong button because it looked more obvious than the right one. No one gave up.

The output is a prediction.

Sometimes it’s useful. Sometimes it catches a real issue. Sometimes it’s wrong in a way that sounds right. That’s the problem.

Will better AI models close the gap?

The usual answer is that the models will get better. Fine. They will.

But even a better model is still using patterns from other products, other tasks, and other users. It can make a smart guess about your product. It can’t show you what happens when a user tries your flow on a Tuesday morning with Slack open and a meeting starting in four minutes.

Your product has its own labels, flows, gaps, and traps. A real user can misunderstand them in a way no one predicted because that exact moment has never happened before.

That’s why you run real UX tests.

Better AI may even make the problem harder to spot. The report will sound cleaner. The reasoning will feel more complete. The advice will look easier to trust. The confidence is the trap.

Prediction is not evidence

Product teams already have enough guesses.

The PM thinks users will understand setup. The designer thinks the new layout is clearer. The founder thinks the pricing page explains the value. The AI thinks the button label is fine.

Maybe they’re right. UX testing exists because maybe they’re not.

Real UX testing is where the guess gets checked. A person tries to complete a task, and the product either helps them or gets in the way. A model saying what a user might do is not the same thing.

The old process was the bottleneck

A lot of old user research was too slow for product teams.

Long timelines. Heavy reports. Too many handoffs. Moderated sessions that took weeks to plan and another week to turn into findings. It made testing feel like a project, not part of building.

That deserved to change. But real users were never the problem. The process was.

The answer to slow research is not fake users. The answer is faster access to real ones.

AI can help with that. It can write better tasks, summarise sessions, group findings, and turn hours of recordings into something a PM or designer can use. It can make real UX testing easier for teams that don’t have a researcher.

That is where AI belongs: around the test, not in place of the user.

The cost of guessing is higher now

People leave when your product makes them work too hard. If they land on your site and don’t understand it, they try a competitor. They ask ChatGPT for another option. They forget you.

A confusing onboarding flow, a vague headline, a pricing page that takes too much work to understand, these are not small details. They are where users decide whether your product is worth more effort.

Shipping fast helps. Shipping fast while guessing what users will do just helps you make mistakes faster.

What real UX testing gives you

Real UX testing gives you the moments AI can’t create.

  • A user reads your headline and thinks you sell something else.
  • A user ignores the feature your team spent weeks building.
  • A user clicks the wrong thing because the right thing doesn’t look clickable.
  • A user invents a workaround that shows how they think.
  • A user gives up, and you see where it happened.

Those are the things your product has to survive. They are also the things no model can reliably predict.

AI can tell you what might happen. Analytics can tell you where something happened. Surveys can tell you what people say happened. Real UX testing shows you what happened while someone tried to use the product.

The one check that isn’t a guess

Every product decision rests on a belief about users.

You believe they’ll understand the page. You believe they’ll find the feature. You believe they’ll trust the pricing. You believe they’ll know what to do next.

AI can challenge those beliefs. It can sharpen them. But it can’t verify them. Only real users can do that.

That’s the one thing AI can’t replace: a real person trying to use your product while you watch what happens.
